Description
Complete a comprehensive comparison of costs for using conventional and High Performance Steels in highway bridges designed with steel box girder sections; identify cost efficient designs for combinations of conventional and High Performance Steels in hybrid designs of steel box girder sections for highway bridges. Subtasks include but may not be limited to:1. Identify a small but knowledgeable group of designers, fabricators, state and federal representatives to provide review and input at critical stages of the study. All communication with reviewers shall be done via e-mail and faxes.2. Develop a complete matrix of steel bridge designs to be analyzed during the study. The matrix shall consider the results of the design trials conducted for the 2000 and 2002 HPS conferences in Baltimore, Maryland and Salt Lake City, Utah and will extend the study to include additional designs using steel box girders. These additional design cases will consider the following specific topics:3.Select list of knowledgeable fabricators to analyze the comparative designs and provide cost estimates. Select fabricators from several regions of the country including the Northeast, the Southeast, the North Central, the South Central, the Northwest and the Southwest.4.In consultation with the Ad Hoc committee, identify critical design, fabrication and costs issues to be addressed by the fabricators, develop the necessary design information and mail to each.5. Analyze the results received from fabricators to produce cost analysis information. As part of this task, the impact of anticipated changes in mill costs will be evaluated.6.Develop an initial set of design guidelines that could be used by designers to select cost effective HPS and hybrid HPS-conventional steel bridge designs using steel box girders.7.Summarize the results of the study in final report in a format suitable for use by designers.
