- NA The Fiscal Year 2003 (FY03) Defense Appropriations Act provides $20 million to the Department of Defense Neurofibromatosis Research Program (NFRP) to develop effective therapies for NF1, NF2, and Schwannomatosis. The U.S. Army Medical Research and Materie l Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) administer this program. The NFRP is releasing Program Announcements for six (6) different funding mechanisms in this notification. The name and intent of each f unding mechanism, its Program Announcement release date, and submission deadline are as follows: 1) The intent of Clinical Trial Award is to sponsor novel clinical research that has the potential to substantially improve today?s approach to the treatment a nd/or management of NF1, NF2, and/or Schwannomatosis. 2) The intent of Clinical Trial Development Award is to provide support to establish the necessary collaborations and develop the necessary infrastructure, including a coordination core, for the foundat ion of a multi-institutional NF-related clinical trial. The goal of these awards is the development of clinical trials with the potential to have a major impact on the treatment of either neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1), NF2, or Schwannomatosis. 3) The intent of Idea Awards is to encourage innovative approaches to neurofibromatosis research. Investigators from all academic levels are eligible to submit proposals. 4) The intent of Investigator-Initiated Research Awards (with optional Nested Postdocotoral Trainees hip(s)) is to sponsor basic and clinically oriented research that will (1) provide insight into the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of neurofibromatosis (NF) and related diseases, (2) result in substantial improvement(s) over today?s approa ch to the diagnosis and treatment of NF1, NF2, and/or Schwannomatosis, and (3) enhance the quality of life for persons with the disease. 5) The intent of New Investigator Awards is to help investigators at the early stages of their careers become establish ed neurofibromatosis (NF) researchers. 6) The intent of Therapeutic Development Award is mechanism is to sponsor the development and evaluation of preclinical model systems for NF1, NF2, and/or Schwannomatosis. The FY03 NFRP Program Announcements were rele ased on March 12, 2003 with a submission deadline of August 20, 2003, 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. The NFRP electronic Program Announcements have been completely revised for FY03. Detailed descriptions of each of these funding mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the FY03 NFRP Program Announcements corresponding that that funding mechanism title. Each Program Announcement can be downloaded from the CDRMP web site (http://cdmrp.army.mil). All applicants will be required to submit one electronic versions of their proposal as a PDF (portable document format) file. All documents may be downloaded from the CDMRP website. The website also contains further information about the, NFRP, NFRP awardees, previous NFRP Program Annou ncements, and other CDMRP sponsored programs and events.
