It is the intent of the Government to purchase the following service using sole source procurement. Contractor shall provide autopsy services as described in the requirements and specifications for the Veterans Affairs San Diego Medical Center 3350 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, CA 92161. STATEMENT OF WORK Autopsy Pathology Services Company will provide autopsy assistant (diener) services as listed to the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Autopsy Pathology Services shall provide an autopsy assistant to perform services as specified to the VA San Diego Healthcare System for patient care purposes. The company works directly for the Autopsy Section of Anatomic Pathology in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. It will be the responsibility of the Autopsy Assistants to assist the Chief, Autopsy Service in providing a complete and comprehensive autopsy service. Once permission is granted for an autopsy, arrangements are made to perform the autopsy as soon as possible, Monday through Friday. At this time, the requesting individual and the Autopsy Assistant will agree upon a time when the autopsy is to be performed. The company shall respond within four hours of requested time. The Autopsy Assistant shall maintain all required licensure and insurance. SCOPE OF WORK The autopsy assistant ensures that the body is properly identified and that the necessary paperwork has been properly executed. He/she assists the Staff Pathologists or Residents in performing the autopsy, which includes: Preparation and set up of instruments and decedents, making the primary incision; removing the contents of the thoracic and abdominal cavities; removing and opening the intestines; removing scalp, brain and pituitary glands, etc. Removal of special organs, such as tongue, eyes, portions of muscles and bones, will be performed as directed by the Chief, Autopsy Service. During the autopsy the assistant will call to the attention of the prosector any abnormal or unusual appearing organs or body structures; he/she will weigh and record the weight of organs removed. Upon completion of the autopsy, the assistant will replace organs, if necessary; tie-off vessels; close the body; and prepare the body for the mortuary service. It will be necessary, in many cases, for the autopsy assistant to obtain specimens for diagnostic testing. These preparations include: touch preps; smears for the identification of bacteria, fungi, and other infectious agents; fluids and other preparations from tissue; and specimens for Electron Microscopy. The diener will clean instruments, autopsy table and morgue, and properly store all equipment and decedents. The assistant must perform all tasks quickly and efficiently. The assistant will be responsible for the morgue including: maintaining general cleanliness and notifying anatomic pathology personnel of supplies needed. The Autopsy Assistant will also assist the staff pathologist in the training of residents in autopsy techniques, such as the proper method of opening, organ removal and removal of special parts.
