Description
Sandia National Laboratories is working towards developing a new concept in internal combustion engine driven electrical generators. The Livermore based program is geared toward demonstration of a 30 kilowatt prototype generator in two years. The program is founded on understanding and quantification of the myriad of components making up the prototype during the development process. The concept utilizes homogeneous charge compression ignition of ultra lean fuel/air charges to reduce NOx formation and approach ideal Otto cycle performance. A unique free piston/linear alternator configuration is utilized to great advantage to electronically control the operating compression ratio of the engine and drastically reduce the number of moving parts. Combustion system experiments and extensive fluid, dynamic and electromagnetic calculations have resulted in a projected fuel to electricity conversion efficiency for the prototype of 50%, with essentially zero NOx emissions. Sandia National Laboratories is seeking partners to be a part of this exciting effort. Of particular value would be industrial participants with experience in providing a path to market following a successful prototype demonstration. Expertise in the area of linear motors or generators, engine control and management electronics, electrical power conditioning, camless valve actuation, turbocharger production and piston engine technology is especially appropriate. For further information, please respond by mail or fax to Alane Dulski by June 21, 2002 at: Sandia National Laboratories, MS 1380, P.O. Box 5800, Albuquerque, New Mexico 87185-1380.
