Description
MSE-Technology Applications, Inc. (MSE) working under a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy, is seeking technologies capable of treating water containing elevated levels of nitrates. Discharge from a water treatment system may contain levels of nitrates as high as 2,500 ppm nitrates. This concentration prohibits discharge to a water storage pond that will support the water treatment system. The concentration of nitrates can be addressed in two locations in the system. The discharge from the existing water treatment system has a flowrate of 10 gpm with a concentration up to 2,500 ppm nitrates. This is the preferred location of treatment. A reverse osmosis (RO) unit is available down stream of the water treatment system. The concentration of nitrates in the water running through the RO unit is reduced to a concentration of less than 10 ppm. A brine solution of water is generated that may contain concentrations as high as 9000 ppm nitrates is generated at a flowrate of approximately 3 gpm. This brine solution can be treated and the water discharged. With the operational costs associated with the RO unit, it is preferred that the water from the water treatment system be treated at a flowrate of 10 gpm. Technologies sought for the treatment of nitrates will minimize operator requirements and minimize energy and maintenance costs. Proposed treatment technologies should be submitted with a general cost of the system, operational restrictions, and operational and maintenance cost requirements. Potential vendors should also include a corporate history of work with the process and locations of similar systems in operation. MSE will evaluate treatment technologies based on the information supplied for this process. Formal request for proposals will be submitted to potential vendors for providing a system and potential installation.
