Description
The U.S. Department of Commerce/NOAA/NMFS intends to be a co-sponsor for the 2002 Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program, a nation-wide educational program sponsored by the American Fisheries Society (AFS).The program is a national program covering all 50 states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Trust Territories, and administered through a partnership between the National Headquarters of AFS and a volunteer network developed among the Society's regional divisions. The goals of the program are to introduce to, stimulate interest in, and develop an appreciation of science disciplines associated with natural resource and environmental management. The program, aimed mainly at minority high school students, is open to students completing grades 10, 11, and 12 and matches a professional mentor to each student. Students work during the summer with their mentors, in laboratories and in the field, collecting samples and assisting in analyzing data. Through this effort, students of ethnic minorities are introduced to the undergraduate and graduate academic pipeline leading to careers in science with the long range goal of increasing the number of minority professionals in the fisheries professions. NMFS shall sponsor ten (10) students for the 2002 summer program. This is a notice of intent with no solicitation package available. (Reference No. NFFKA-2-13).
