- Description
- NASA/ARC plans to issue a Request for Quotation (RFQ) for a Rapid Temp Model Box Furnace with inert gas sealed system, power supply and replacement molydisilicide heating element for Box Furnace to be used in the Ames Thermal Protection Laboratory at NASA Ames Research Center. This procurement is being conducted under the Simplified Acquisition Procedures (SAP). NASA/ARC intends to purchase a Rapid Temp Model 1712 GS FL Box Furnace, along with replacement molydisilicide heating element for Rapid Temp Model box furnace, from CM Furnaces, Inc., 103 Dewey Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003 under the authority of FAR 13.106-1(b)(1) based on the fact that the CM Furnaces System has unique features that meet the requirements of the Ames Thermal Protection Laboratory. The Rapid Temp Model Box Furnace with inert gas sealed system is comprised of 1) Power supply equipped with Eurotherm 2404 microprocessor-based programmable controller and six ramp/soak pairings of 15kW, 208/240 volt and single phase service. 2) Molydisilicide heating elements. 3) Inner chamber size of 13"x11"x12". 4) Maximum Operating Temperature 1700 degrees C. 5) Gas seal on door. High temperatures are required for the processing of advanced thermal protection materials such as new ROCCI, black tile, and UHTC materials. To achieve adequate control of process temperature, the temperature controller must have at least 6 pairs of ramps and soaks . ROCCI , a carbon substrate-based material, must be processed in inert gas due to its high tendency to oxidize while either air or oxygen is present. In order to maintain inert gas inside the furnace for processing samples, the furnace door should have a very good and tight seal around to prevent the oxidation of samples. Furthermore, the size of the chamber is at least 10 inch x 10 inch x 10.5 inch to accommodate the large sample of actual flightware. It is critical that the unit purchased has a capacity of heat-treating large samples of materials ( size ranging around and up to 1 ft x 1 ft x 1 ft), a gas seal to process materials in inert gas, in the environment of inert gas and super high temperature with a maximum of 1700 degree C. The Government intends to acquire a commercial item using FAR Part 12. Interested organizations may submit their capabilities and qualifications to perform the effort in writing to the identified point of contact not later than 1:30 p.m. local time on April 11, 2002. Such capabilities/qualifications will be evaluated solely for the purpose of determining whether or not to conduct this procurement on a competitive basis. A determination by the Government not to compete this proposed effort on a full and open competition basis, based upon responses to this notice is solely within the discretion of the government. Oral communications are not acceptable in response to this notice. All responsible sources may submit an offer, which shall be considered by the agency. An Ombudsman has been appointed.
